原是一首古老的北卡州的村民，歌曲容是於1866年一起真的事件。1958年由The Kingston Trio ( 京士三重唱 ) 之改翻唱，得了告示牌排行榜的冠，也因而才被大所熟知。次年(1959)，事件被拍成影〈The Legend of Tom Dooley〉，以首歌作主曲，由於中文片名被〈魂奈何天〉，後有多人「主曲」三字省略，而以此成了首歌的中文歌名。
Tom Dula (Dooley) 是美南北中南的士兵，前在家即已是受女孩迎的大情人。後返，情人Anne Foster已嫁人，所以他而和Laura Foster ( Anne的堂姐妹 ) 在一起。
一天晚上，Laura了她的衣服走了她父的，然是要和Tom私奔婚，但自此人蒸。後因Anne和她的妹妹Perline 吵露了口 ( Perline警告要出Anne知道Laura的事 )，官方因此疑二人，最後，Perline於出是Tom害了Laura，而Anne是忙埋。
Laura的因此被找到，而Tom也田西州被逮捕返回受。中Tom除了持自己罪，未多作。二年後死刑定，吊的天，Tom被坐在上赴刑，沿路不地和行的民玩笑。套索上他的脖子，他：『若知道你用新的子，我先脖子洗乾些。』到有何最後言？Tom握起他的右手，：『各位先生！你有看到手？有看到它抖？有看到它晃？我未害女孩的一根。』然後，Tom下的陷阱落下。
由於Tom的，Anne在此案中判罪。但一般人咸信，她仍著Tom，在妒嫉心之下害了堂妹Laura，她才是案的真。而且，在埋了一把原於Anne的刀。果若如此，Tom是替人罪而赴死，由件三角情的悲，我不得不感情力量的大。
歌中提到的Mr. Grayson是逮捕Tom Dula的要角。也有他是Laura Foster的追求者，有意娶她妻。
是一首非常典的西部村民，美唱片工代世歌曲 之一( Songs of the Century )，也是我第一首接的美村民歌曲。
